Idea behind the painting: Charmers come in all sizes. I am a big fan of dogs. Even the ‘ugly’ ones are wonderful and deserve a loving home

Sharpei dogs only started becoming public in the early 1980s. Before then, the breed did not exist with the American Kennel Club (AKC). The dogs are from China, but the communistic government considered them to be representative of the emperors, and therefore ordered to have them all killed. They were all killed except for three, that some Americans were able to sneak out in the 1970s. They started breeding them and the AKC recognized the breed in 1992. This painting reflects the regal nature of these interesting dogs.
